Non-Surgical/medical

We have a medical solution for those patients where surgery isn't a viable option or who want to avoid invasive procedures. Our nutritional, exercise and psychological program along with a prescription medication (Saxenda® or Contrave®) intervention, assists patients to lose weight without surgery and to help sustain weight loss long-term.

We know losing weight and keeping it off can be hard, and it involves much more than eating less, moving more and having motivation. When you lose weight, it causes changes in the levels of hormones that affect your appetite. This can cause your body to work against you as it tries to gain back the weight you have lost, by making you feel more hungry and increasing your desire to eat. Both of the medications we offer to assist with weight loss work by altering either/both gut hormones and brain chemicals to take away brain and gut ‘noise’ and aid you to make better decisions in regards to food choice and behaviour.

One of these, Saxenda®, is similar to a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is released in your body after eating.  Saxenda®, like the natural hormone, helps to control your appetite, making you feel fuller and less hungry.

The other, Contrave®, works in combination with the hunger and reward system, helping with the neurochemical effects and subsequent regulation of appetite.

Saxenda® and contrave® Program

During this program you can expect:

Our non-surgical/medical weight management program includes administration of either of two different medications. Saxenda®, a natural gut hormone daily injection, works in the brain to decrease appetite and thereby reduce food intake, resulting in weight loss. Contrave®, a daily oral medication targets more than one driver of eating; fullness, and eating for pleasure, and therefore helps control cravings and hunger. The program may last anywhere between 5 weeks and 12 months, and involve two stages; losing weight and long-term maintenance.

The program involves initial comprehensive nutritional and lifestyle assessments by members of our nutrition, medical, exercise and behavioural health teams and ongoing consultations with the bariatric practitioner at standard time frames set out in the process.
