Our Mission, Vision & Values
The Weight loss surgery Process
-
-
Potential bariatric patients must be referred by a General Practitioner. This GP should give details of any medical issues and previous surgeries, including your weight and height measurements. The letter of referral must be received by our clinic before your initial consultation appointments can be made.
If for some reason, you are unable to obtain a GP referral, please contact the clinic to discuss.
-
Once we have received your referral, we will contact you to make appointments with various members of our multidisciplinary team. During these appointments, we will cover all aspects of the pre, intra, and post surgical phases so you know what to expect. You will have initial consultations with the bariatric nurse and the surgeon who will carry out the operation. These include discussions of all of the surgical options available to you—and the risks and complications associated with these.
It’s important that you are armed with as much knowledge as possible as you plan for a bariatric surgery; these appointments are a crucial part of the process.
-
You’ll have choices to make, and we want to make sure you’re informed! After seeing the bariatric nurse and the surgeon, you will then be required to meet with the nutritionist and the psychologist.
During your initial consultations, the team will be working to assess your general health, looking specifically at any co-morbidities (conditions relating to your weight). We will give a comprehensive run-down of the different surgical procedures available based on our selection philosophy, the complications, risks, and preventative measures. We will educate you on how nutrition should look both pre-and post-surgery, and equip you with tools to deal with the physical and emotional changes and challenges that come with significant weight loss after your operation.
Questions are encouraged as we discuss and explain the options. The team will always try to answer these questions adequately and honestly.
-
Once you and the team have decided on which operation will best help you in your weight loss goals (if surgery is right for you), you will schedule and undergo the procedure. You will receive all of the details you need about required surgery prep and recovery times. Most bariatric patients spend two to three nights in hospital.
-
The job is not done once the surgery is over; our multidisciplinary team will work hard alongside you to strive for the best and most sustainable results. You can expect to have regular appointments: at four to six weeks post-surgery and then at four, eight, 12, 18, and 24 months. Generally, your GP will take over your care after this stage. Sometimes, the team will want to see a patient more frequently. This will be discussed as appropriate.
Follow-up appointments may include blood tests and occasionally other studies or investigations. These are used when necessary to monitor and maintain your health, staying on top of potential issues. We encourage regular visits to your GP and other specialists as required for management of any medical conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure—diseases that are common with excess weight.
All of our bariatric operations are tools to lose weight, not cures, miracles, or guarantees. Regaining weight is a very real possibility, and the follow-up programming is an effort to minimise this. You are a team member playing a part in your one success, and willing collaboration with the multidisciplinary team is your best chance of success.
